Minister Verhagen visits Serbia

Minister Verhagen of Foreign Affairs will visit Serbia on 21 July. He will have talks with his colleague Jeremić about relations with the Netherlands and the European Union.

Serbia signed the Stabilisation and Association Agreement with the European Union. Partly at the insistence of the Netherlands the ratification of the SAA and the implementation of the Interim Agreement will only start when Serbia fully cooperates with the International Criminal Tribunal for former Yugoslavia.

The Chief Prosecutor of the Tribunal Brammertz in his report to the UN Security Council in June concluded that full cooperation has not yet been achieved. The Netherlands acknowledges that Serbia's cooperation with the Tribunal has considerably improved.

"That is why I go to Belgrade to discuss enhanced economic cooperation and cooperation in other fields with Serbia" - said Minister Verhagen (Foreign Affairs). "As long as Serbia does not fully cooperate with Tribunal, the SAA can not be implemented or ratified. The Netherlands remains strict in this."

To date, two suspects indicted by the Tribunal have still escaped arrest. One of them is General Mladić.

Ministar Ferhagen u poseti Srbiji
Ministar inostranih poslova Ferhagen će posetiti Srbiju 21. jula.

Note to travelers going to or through Serbia!
According to Serbian law foreigners visiting Serbia have to register themselves within 24 hours at a local police station in the neighbourhood were they stay. Organisations like travel agencies, hotels and and private persons should register their foreign guests within 12 hours after arrival.

Violating this rule can result in fines or imprisonment. If you do not have a green card valid for Serbia - denoted by SRB (not SCG, which is an old designation) - you will be charged a border insurance fee, the price of which depends on your vehicle.
