16 April 2007 - Course for army officers on the “Law of Armed Conflict”
A course for army officers on the “Law of Armed Conflict” began at the Peacekeeping Operations Center (PKOC) in Belgrade. It was organized with the financial help of the embassies of the kingdom of the Netherlands and kingdom of Norway and in cooperation with the International Institute of Humanitarian Law from San Remo and the ICRC.

This is the third time this course is being organized in Serbia, but it is the first time it has an international character since, besides 23 participants from Serbia, there are 8 participants from the region: Albania, Croatia, Macedonia and Montenegro. Besides the Serbian participants from the Armed Forces, there are also representatives from the Ministry of Interior and the Gendarmerie.

The officers will gain basic knowledge on the law of armed conflict, international protection of refugees, relations of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) with the Army, the notion of command responsibility and prevention of war crimes. This will be a good preparation for those officers who will be participating in Peacekeeping operations around the world.

The opening of the course was attended by ambassadors and defence attachés from the representing countries. Speeches were held by: Director of the PKOC Col Zoran Dević, Assistant Minister of Defence Mrs. Snežana Samardžić-Marković, H.E. Dutch Ambassador Ron J.P.M. van Dartel, Deputy Chief of General Staff Gen Miloje Miletić, and LOAC Course Director BGen Karl Edlinger.

On the occasion of this regional course, the Assistant Minister officially opened the building “Mali internat”, a completely renovated accommodation place designed for participants of courses organized by the PKOC. The reconstruction of the building was made possible thanks to the donations from the embassies of the Kingdoms of the Netherlands and Norway.
